Abstract
Time reduction of the product development process, because of growing competitive pressure, has an increased importance today. This paper presents a strategy how to shorten the process chain by consideration of knowledge of areas, which are usually looked at quite late. The approach that is presented here builds on early variation and assessment of the construction structure of a product. In order to be able to assess the construction structure variants, essential design guidelines should be analysed in a knowledge-based way. First examinations resulted the necessary design data by analysing these DFX rules. Furthermore, it will be shown, how the product structure for a computer aided analysis can be represented in a formal, computer processable form. Another main focus was placed on the question, at what time and with what kind of computer-aided-support to capture the necessary design data.
